History of Marshall’s
In 1956, an entrepreneur named Alfred Marshall came up with a marketing slogan: Brand Names For Less. He liked the slogan so much that he decided to found a store based on the principle. The first Marshall’s department store in Boston MA was stocked with distressed, out of season, over-run and close-out items, at prices that were 20 to 60 percent less than a conventional department store.
The new Marshall’s department store was an instant hit. Alfred Marshall sold the chain he’d founded to a retail holding company called the Melville Company in 1976; in 1995, Marshall’s was sold again, this time to TJX, the premiere off-price retailer in the filed of apparel and home fashion.
Off-price merchandising was an $18 billion market in 2010. Off-price merchandising is an ideal business model in recessionary times; in fact, in the last few years many businesses have moved into this sector that competition for fresh inventory is fierce.
How Does Marshall’s Keep Its Prices So Low?
How is Marshall’s able to keep its prices so low? One reason is because Marshall’s buyers are constantly acquiring new merchandise whereas department store buyers only make new purchases a few times a year. Because Marshall’s buyers are always on the prowl for fresh acquisitions, they are able to take advantage of spur of the moment bargains.
Marshall’s buyers have relationships with over 12,000 vendors in 60 countries. Additionally, Marshall’s never returns merchandise to vendors, which means that vendors are willing to give them a much better price on their goods.
Marshall’s Discounts and Coupons
At one point, Marshall’s had an online store associated with its website at https://www1.marshallsonline.com/ where customers could shop for merchandise. The online store has been discontinued. Marketing executives say this is because Marshall’s merchandise has a very quick turnover and it would be impossible to keep online inventory up to date.
Since there is no online store, Marshall’s does not promote online coupons or codes for website shopping savings the way many other stores do
